Module 04 - Safe Boat Operation

Personal Watercraft Safety

Before heading out on your PWC it’s important to instruct your passengers (guests) on proper safety procedures.

Here are the basics:

  • Show your passengers (guests) where the PWC safety equipment is stored.
  • Have passengers (guests) read and understand the safety labels on the PWC.
  • Inform passengers (guests) that PWCs are not as stable as traditional boats, and that the PWC will become less stable as each passenger (guest) boards.
  • Always have passengers (guests) keep their weight stable and evenly distributed.
  • Remind passengers (guests) never to place their feet or legs in the water while the PWC is in motion.
  • Have passengers (guests) hold onto the seat strap while the PWC is underway.

PWC Dangers:

Always stay away from the PWCs intake grate, and jet-thrust nozzle while the engine is running:

  • The intake grate is located on the underside of the stern of the PWC. It can suck in items such as long hair, loose clothing or PFD straps, causing serious injury or death.
  • The high-powered jet-thrust nozzle is located at the base of the stern of the PWC. Water and/or debris that is forced through the jet-thrust nozzle can cause serious injury to anyone who gets too close.
