Module 05 - Navigation and Right-of-Way Rules

Navigating at Night: Port and Starboard Approach

Port (left) Approach

If you’re approaching another boat, and see a green and white light, this means that another boat is approaching the port (left) side of your boat.

When another boat is approaching your port side, you are the stand-on vessel, and can maintain your speed and direction.

Starboard (right) Approach

If you’re approaching another boat, and see a red and white light, this means that another boat is approaching the starboard (right) side of your boat.

In this scenario, you are the give-way vessel, and do not have the right-of-way. You must change your speed and direction, and pass at a safe distance from the other boat to avoid a collision.
