Fire Extinguisher Maintenance and Tips

 

A dead fire extinguisher is useless. To make sure that your fire extinguisher will work when you need it, you should inspect it for the following each month:

  • Check the gauge to ensure the extinguisher is fully charged
  • Check the extinguishers hose and seals, and replace any that are cracked or broken
  • Weigh your extinguisher to make sure it meets the minimum weight requirements on the label - recharge it if it’s below 90% of it’s capacity
  • Turn your fire extinguisher upside down and shake it at least once a month to prevent the fire fighting agent from clumping

Fire Extinguisher Tips - Always remember to:

  • Use a fire extinguisher designed for marine use.
  • Ensure your extinguisher has an external gauge that indicates the fire extinguishers charge.
  • Remember that CO2 and Halon type extinguishers use colourless, odorless gases that displace oxygen- always use caution if you’re using or storing these type of extinguishers in an enclosed space.
  • Never use water to put out an electrical or flammable liquid fire, as it will spread spread and conduct electricity- Always use a fire extinguisher.
