Module 02 - Boating Equipment
SAFETY EQUIPMENT
The Small Vessel Regulations require that boat safety equipment be carried onboard your boat at all times. The type of equipment required varies depending on the type and length of your boat. Be sure to check your safety equipment before and after every trip to ensure it will work properly when you need it!
Your safety equipment is legally required to be:
- In good working order
- Regularly maintained
- Replaced in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions
- Readily accessible for immediate use
If you operate a pleasure craft that does not have the required safety equipment onboard, or if it is not in good working order you are violating the Small Vessel Regulations. The same law applies if you loan your boat.
Remember: Carrying the right equipment onboard your boat is one of the most important things you can do to ensure you are boating safely and it’s the law. Always show your passengers (guests) how to use the safety equipment on your boat so that everyone is prepared in the event of an emergency.
There are four types of boating safety equipment required in Canada:
- Personal Safety Equipment
- Boat Safety Equipment
- Distress Equipment
- Navigation Equipment
