PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE
Don’t let a leaky hull spoil a great day on the water. Be a responsible paddler and regularly inspect and maintain your paddle craft and all of your paddling equipment.
Hull integrity and water tightness are crucial for paddle craft. Keeping your canoe or kayak in good condition will help prevent hull leaks that could place you in danger.
Maintaining Your Paddle Craft
To maintain your paddle craft, complete the following procedure regularly:
- Inspect the craft for water tightness—check the hull, gaskets and hatch covers.
- Patch any holes using a material that matches the type of hull.
- Clean your paddle craft regularly using plain water or a non-phosphate detergent.
- Store the paddle craft off the ground and out of direct sunlight.
- Check and tighten the screws and deck fittings regularly.
- Treat the hull with an appropriate UV inhibitor.
- Check the flotation air bags to ensure they hold air (if applicable).
- Check the lines and grab handles for signs of fraying.
- Inspect the paddles for any signs of wear or damage.
