PADDLING TECHNIQUES
Whether you’re paddling solo or tandem, both skill and technique will be required to operate a canoe or a kayak.
How to Hold Your Canoe Paddle:
Place your hands about shoulder width apart on the paddle.
Grasp the top of the paddle handle with your top hand and hold onto the throat of the paddle with your bottom hand.
For more strength, try to keep your arms as straight as possible while paddling.
How to Hold Your Kayak Paddle:
Place your hands about shoulder width apart on the paddle.
When paddling, your arms should be at 90° angles. If you place the paddle on your head and reach up to grab it, your arm will be in the proper position.
Kayak paddle tip: Look for the label on the blade—if the label is upside down, the paddle is too!
