MATCHING SHOTGUN AMMO
Shotshells vary in length, gauge, size and type of shot or ‘pellet’. With shotgun ammo, you have to check both the shell length and the gauge to make sure they match the data stamp on your shotgun.
The gauge of a shotgun shell is printed on the base of the shell. The gauge and shell length will also be indicated on the ammunition packaging.
For example, 12 gauge shotgun shells come in these different lengths:- 2-¾ in. (70mm).
- 3-in. (76mm).
- 3-½ in. (89mm).
Although standard, these lengths aren’t firm. You may come across different gauge lengths and some serious shotguns may require a magnum load. If you’re not sure what you need, ask a pro.
