Module 02 - FIREARM SAFETY
LOADING YOUR FIREARM - LIVE ACTION
The procedure for loading and unloading your firearm will vary depending on the type of firearm you’re working with, but the basics are covered here:
How to Load a Firearm Safely:
STEP 1: Point the muzzle in a safe direction.
STEP 2: Turn the safety ‘ON’ (if you can load it while the safety is engaged).
STEP 3: Make sure there’s no ammo in the firearm or obstructions in the barrel. To check for obstructions, look from the breech toward the muzzle (if possible). Alternatively, check from the breech using a tool, such as a barrel light.
STEP 4: Found something? Clear the obstruction using a cleaning rod.
STEP 5: Match the data stamp on the firearm to the head stamp on the ammo.
STEP 6: Different types of firearms will load differently— these are the general rules:
For Single Shot Firearms: Place the ammunition directly in the chamber and then close the action.
For Lever Action Firearms With a Tubular Magazine: Make sure the action is closed, load the magazine, and then cycle the action to load a round from the magazine to the chamber.
For Firearms With a Removable Box Magazine: Insert ammunition into the magazine, then insert the magazine into the firearm and close the action to load the chamber.
For Firearms With a Non-Removable Box Magazine: Load directly into the magazine and then close the action to load the chamber.
STEP 7: Turn the safety ‘ON’, if it’s not already engaged.
