Module 05 - HANDGUNS 101
THE FIRING CYCLE OF A SEMI-AUTO PISTOL
See how it works:
- First, pull the slide backward—the slide will automatically return via spring power—this will cycle a new cartridge into the chamber and cock the hammer.
- The firing pin is retained within the bolt face, which closes firmly against the chambered cartridge.
- When the trigger is pulled, the hammer will spring forward and strike the firing pin, which will then strike the cartridge and fire the pistol.
- The leftover energy from the blast will automatically load another cartridge into the chamber without any further operation of the slide.
