Module 07 - MARKSMANSHIP

STANDING POSITION

Also known as the ‘offhand position’, standing is the most difficult position to shoot from with accuracy. It’s a tough position to hold and remain steady in so you’ll need to be able to line up the shot and shoot quickly. You can avoid instability by finding a stabilizing tree branch or large rock and resting your barrel on it while taking aim.

Shooting in Standing Position

This stance will vary slightly depending on the body mechanics of the shooter.  Generally though, when you’re shooting in standing position, you’ll turn your body 45° to the right of the target. With your feet shoulder-width apart, support the firearm with your left arm and hand. Hold the stock firmly (but not too tightly) against your shoulder using your right hand.

Lefty?

Support the firearm with your right arm and hand. Hold the stock firmly (but not too tightly) against your shoulder using your left hand.

Wise Words: Avoid a Scope Shiner

Avoid scope-shame by making sure you have enough space between your face and the scope no matter which shooting stance you adopt. If you don’t leave space when shooting, your face may get throttled from the force of the recoil.
