How To Save The Head For Mounting
If it’s a prize specimen and you want to turn it into a mount, you’ll need to make that decision before you even pull the trigger. Shoot for the lungs as your target vital zone because that area is far enough away from the head and neck that it won’t leave a visible mark in the nape.
If you’re mounting it, remember that the head, neck and shoulders should be skinned out before the animal is quartered by you or by a butcher. Remember, once the skin has been cut, it can’t really be fixed and a flaw will show in the finished mount. Taxidermists are good at their job but if you need a flaw fixed, don’t expect plastic surgery.
