USING TECHNOLOGY
Modern technology has greatly improved both hunting equipment and the rescue services that are available to backcountry hunters. However, technology has also introduced a problem—yes, rescue helicopters can fly into remote locations to pick you and your two broken legs up, but this ‘guarantee’ of rescue emboldens inexperienced hunters to strike out into remote locations where it’s unsafe for them to go. Don’t bet your life on something that needs a full tank of gas or a charged battery to work.

Can you use a compass as well as you can wield a GPS? Sure, a GPS is a great tool in a remote location… unless it gets wet and the screen goes blank. So, go ahead, get the latest and greatest gear, but be a smart hunter and know how to use the old standby tools when your new stuff powers down.
