NAVIGATION LIGHT REQUIREMENTS
The sun may begin to set before you return from your paddle trip and if it does, you’ll need to stay safe and be visible to other boaters while paddling in conditions with reduced visibility. For reasons like this, paddlers are required to either carry a flashlight or lantern with a white light, or be able to exhibit the same lights as a sailboat.
If you would prefer higher visibility, there are navigation light packages available for paddlers. They aren’t required, but they may make you feel more comfortable on the water, especially if you prefer paddling in the early morning or at sunset when the visibility is reduced.
Be sure to check with your state for navigation light requirements, as these laws may vary.
