All paddlers require a basic level of skill and competency in order to operate a paddle craft safely. However, if the weather takes a turn for the worse while you’re on the water, additional operating skills and a calm, clear-minded head may be necessary in order for you to return to shore safely.

When you combine poor weather with low paddler skill level and an unexpected emergency, the results can be disastrous. You should never take the risk of paddling in bad weather but if you must, be confident that you can handle the pressure, or stay on shore.
