HYPOTHERMIA SYMPTOMS

Hypothermia Symptoms

Is your buddy looking a little dozy? Did you notice his hands trembling on the handlebars?

The following symptoms are signs of hypothermia:

  • Uncontrollable shivering
  • Slurred speech
  • Drowsiness
  • Lack of coordination
  • Memory lapse
  • Slow breathing
  • Slow heart rate

Avoid frozen waterways and stay warm and dry out there. Layer up appropriately for the weather and pack any extra supplies you may need. Don’t be a hero. If you’re cold and shivering, let your group know you’re pulling over and layer up. Chances are, they’ll welcome the break because they may be feeling cold too!

RIDER SAFETY TIP: FROSTBITE 101

Frostbite is what happens when your skin is exposed to extremely cold temperatures, wind chill, dampness or when your circulation is restricted (due to tight clothing or any medications you may be taking). Fingers, toes, noses, and ears… those are the zones that tend to feel it first. Look for white patches on your skin and pay attention to a prickly feeling in the affected area. If the prickling stops and goes numb, you’re getting worse, not better. Warm the area using body heat and warm clothing but don’t rub or pour hot water on the affected skin because you could damage the nerve endings. Brace yourself - it will sting when the feeling returns to the frostbitten area.
