HOW TO TAKE A COMPASS BEARING:
STEP 1
Hold the compass in a level position to get an accurate reading.
STEP 2
Point the orienteering or ‘direction of travel’ arrow towards your destination.
STEP 3
Rotate the compass housing until the orienteering arrow lines up with the magnetic needle, to make sure the ‘true north’ end of the needle is pointing to north (not south).
STEP 4
Determine where the degree markings around the housing line up with the orienteering arrow. The degree marking is your bearing.
Remember, if you're in a hilly area, or a dark or foggy location, take a bearing of your direction of travel while you can see it, then continue to use this bearing to maintain your direction of travel.
